  1. Using this technique on steel turns some rust back into iron and scrapes off some of the rust, as the alumina it produces is a fine abrasive. Not terribly useful by itself, but far preferable to having microscopic seeds of rust.

  2. Or fine steel wool. With a little chrome polish is best.

    Wear gloves. As the fibers like to go right in your skin.

    Aluminum foil actually sounds a bit better to use.

  3. I do this for the chrome on my motorcycle.
    Whoever told me to do it suggested using diet coke, I don’t know if it makes much of a difference but it works great.

  4. A similar trick works with silverware and copper pieces – cover them with aluminium foil and leave them overnight in a water+vinegar mix, the pieces will become clean.
